A few people have mentioned that they're having trouble with the application form. This mainly appears to be due to one of two things:

1) The two fields that have character limits (brief description of work, directions to studio) - for these, spaces and punctuation marks are counted as characters (because we have space constraints in the print materials, and a space takes up as much room in print as a normal character), so one thing to check is that your total character count is less than 80/100 including spaces, full stops, commas etc. An entry of 'I create sculptures of bees.' is 28 characters, not 23.

2) Large files take a while to upload, and it might appear that the form is stuck while the upload is taking place. A 3Mb image file will take around a minute and a half to upload on a standard 4MB broadband connection, longer on slower connections. If you're on dial-up internet then it will take up to 7 minutes, and this might lead to the site 'timing out'.

There are a number of error messages built in to the form in case something obvious goes wrong - these are intended to be as helpful as possible. In the first case, for instance, a message appears in red to tell you that you are using too many characters and highlights the problematic field. Simply reduce the characters, re-attach your uploads and you should be in business.

If you continue to have problems, please register for our forum and post in the 2010 Application thread, but in order to help you as effectively as we can, we need as much information about the problem as possible. Specifically:

1. Which web browser you are using, and which version it is (discoverable from the browser's HELP menu - HELP > ABOUT) - for instance, is it Internet Explorer 6? Firefox 2.0?*
2. Any error messages you receive
3. The file size of any documents you are trying to upload (size in kb or Mb, not size in pixels)
4. The type and speed of your internet connection.

plus any other information you think might be relevant.

*Please note that older browsers such as Internet Explorer 5.0 and Netscape 4.0, both over 10 years old, are considered obsolete, and may result in problems not only on this site, but on all standards-compliant websites. We strongly recommend that you upgrade to a more up-to-date browser asap for a much enhanced - and significantly more secure - browsing experience.

Due to unforeseen demand we are going to be allowing the entry of a venue or groups to this year’s Helfa Gelf. This means that if you are exhibiting in a space with other artists you can apply under a group or venue name. The group will have to decide:

a) a single name
b) a single image for the brochure.
c) one contact e-mail address and telephone number
d) a minimum of one artist to be present in the venue at all times.

In terms of fees, £50 will cover the costs of up to 5 artists; any further subsequent artists will have to pay £10 each extra.

We will not be able to provide each participating artist in a group with a separate image in the brochure, however as ever, you can add images and content to your webpage with details of the artists. You do of course still have the option to apply as individual artists even if you are in a group and each pay the £50 membership fee. In this case you will get your own image, artist statement and webpage, just like last year.

Also, in case you are having trouble applying, if you were a member last year and your details haven’t changed we can just take last years info and put it onto this years database without you having to fill in the application form. You can e-mail us any new images you would like us to use separately (make sure they still adhere to the instructions on the site).

Because of these changes we are extending the application deadline to the 21 February!
